Dear Friends of AALE: As many of you know, it was my hope to retire when I turned 65 last year. However, the Department of Education's pointed attempts to rewrite the history of American Association of Liberal Education's recognition made it both difficult and imprudent to make important changes in AALE's senior leadership at that time. Now that AALE has once again been fully recognized by the Department, I have revived my retirement plans, and have announced to the board my hope to turn the leadership of AALE over to other hands on June 1, 2009. The purpose of this note is to inform you of this decision and to solicit nominations and applications for the presidency of AALE. Broadly speaking, we are looking for someone with demonstrated management and leadership skills in both domestic and international higher education. Candidates should be knowledgeable about the major trends and issues in liberal arts education, well informed about the current state of academic accreditation, and capable of articulating the high vision and purposes of liberal education when representing AALE at national and international events and forums, and when speaking to senior college administrators and foundation leaders. The candidate should possess some fund raising skills, whether in obtaining grants or working with supportive individuals. The president works with AALE's distinguished board of trustees, and will be involved in recruiting new members in an effort to strengthen the Academy’s role in the future of liberal learning and peer review. AALE is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Salary and benefits will be based on experience and qualifications, and on the present size and anticipated growth of AALE.
