I just ran across the NAS…don’t know how I’ve missed it. I’m currently reading the “Race and Higher Education Report” from 2001. While it is premature for me to comment, I’m wondering if there is any other data or reports NAS has produced. I’m currently working on my doctorate and one of the issues before me is the social construct of race, specifically in education. Without going into the details, why does the DoE segregate students by race, a non-biological entity.

Dear Larry,

Glad you found us, and best wishes in your doctoral studies. NAS has published a number of other research reports (especially in recent years), which you can find at http://www.nas.org/publications/reports. But I think you are asking about reports on diversity and racial preferences. We have two from 2004: http://www.nas.org/articles/the_changing_shape_of_the_river_affirmative_action_and_recent_social_scienc and http://www.nas.org/articles/affirmative_action_at_three_universities. NAS president Peter Wood’s book “Diversity: The Invention of a Concept” is also a good resource.
