NAS at the Movies: Documentary Film Screening of Ivory Tower in New York City

National Association of Scholars

NAS is hosting a movie screening and invites you to attend!

We will show the film Ivory Tower, a documentary about the rising costs of college. It features profiles of Harvard College, Deep Springs College, Arizona State University, Spelman College, Cooper Union, and Wesleyan University, among several others. As tuition rates spiral and student debt passes $1 trillion, filmmaker Andrew Rossi (Page One: Inside The New York Times) assembles a portrait of a great American institution at the breaking point. The film also covers some college alternatives, such as Peter Thiel’s sponsorship of young people not going to college, and Coursera MOOCs.

From the official website:

Ivory Tower reveals how colleges in the United States, long regarded as leaders in higher education, came to embrace a business model that often promotes expansion over quality learning. But along the way we also find unique programs, from Stanford to the free desert school Deep Springs to the historically black all women’s college Spelman, where the potential for life-changing college experiences endure. Ultimately, Ivory Tower asks, What price will society pay if higher education cannot revolutionize college as we know it and evolve a sustainable economic model?

Where: AMC Loews 34th Street 14 & IMAX

When: Thursday, September 25 7:30PM - 9:30PM
