Why Subsidize University Presses?

George Leef

A few weeks ago, perusing the Chronicle's "new scholarly books" section, I saw some flabbergastingly silly titles, which piqued my interest in the publisher of one of them, the UNC Press. That led to today's Pope Center piece, Stop the Presses, Or At Least Stop Their Subsidies!

I don't think there's any good reason for taxpayers or students to help subsidize the publication of academic books. We should let university presses sink or swim without unwilling financial help.
