VIDEO: Mao's America: A Discussion with Xi Van Fleet

National Association of Scholars

The affinity between cultural revolutionaries in China and American progressives has long been known. Over the last decade, this affinity has shown its face as the official policy and doctrine of many American institutions—particularly in education. From the Black Lives Matter movement to the current pro-Hamas sentiment interrupting classrooms in K-12 and at colleges and universities, students have been used to advance political objectives by teachers and organizations. This usage of students as the primary group leading cultural changes isn't new.

This event features Xi Van Fleet, a Chinese dissident and education advocate. Van Fleet lived through Mao's Cultural Revolution and immigrated to the United States in 1986. This year, Van Fleet published her new book, Mao's America: A Survivor's Warning. The book details the similarities between the revolution among America's progressive left and Mao's devastating reorganization of Chinese society from 1966 to 1967.
